Are all-season tires safe enough in the snow?

All-season tires provide adequate safety in mild winter conditions, but are not suitable for extreme situations such as prolonged frost, heavy snow, or mountainous terrain. They perform less well than true winter tires at temperatures below 7 degrees. Whether they are safe enough depends on your residential area, driving behavior, and the weather conditions you expect.

What is the difference between all-season tires and winter tires?

All-season tires have a harder rubber compound that becomes stiff in cold temperatures, while winter tires use soft rubber that remains flexible below 7 degrees. This difference largely determines the grip and safety in winter conditions.

The rubber compound is the most important difference. Winter tires contain more natural rubber and special additives that keep the tire supple in cold weather. All-season tires are designed for a wide temperature range, but must make compromises between summer and winter performance.

The tread design also differs significantly. Winter tires have:

  • Deeper grooves for better water drainage
  • More sipes (thin cuts) for grip on ice
  • Special block shapes that hold snow
  • Softer sidewalls for better contact with the road surface

All-season tires have a more moderate tread that works reasonably well in various conditions, but excels nowhere. They are quieter on dry roads and wear more evenly, but provide less grip when it gets really cold.

How do all-season tires perform on snow and ice?

All-season tires have longer braking distances and less grip on snow and ice compared to winter tires. At temperatures below 7 degrees, the rubber becomes hard, reducing contact with the road surface and decreasing safety.

On fresh snow, all-season tires can still function reasonably well, especially in thicker snow layers where the tread can find grip. The problem arises with:

  • Frozen snow and ice
  • Changing conditions (wet-frozen)
  • Temperatures well below freezing
  • Hills and curves in winter conditions

The braking distance increases considerably. Where winter tires still find grip, all-season tires slide through. This difference becomes greater as temperature drops and the surface becomes more slippery.

On wet roads in winter, all-season tires perform better than on ice, but still worse than winter tires. The cold rubber can push away water less effectively, promoting aquaplaning.

For daily use in the Netherlands, where extreme winter conditions are limited, all-season tires may be sufficient. But with unexpected slippery conditions or a harsh winter, you fall short.

When are all-season tires not safe enough?

All-season tires are unsafe at temperatures below 4 degrees, on slopes with snow or ice, during prolonged frost periods, and in mountainous areas. Even with unexpected slippery conditions, they provide insufficient grip to brake or steer safely.

Specific dangerous situations:

  • Hills and bridges where ice forms
  • Early morning drives during frost periods
  • Sudden weather change from rain to frost
  • Long-distance driving during winter conditions

In mountainous terrain, all-season tires are downright dangerous. The combination of slopes, curves, and a winter surface requires maximum grip that only winter tires can provide.

Also prolonged frost (several days below zero) makes all-season tires unsuitable. The rubber becomes so hard that grip practically disappears. This especially applies to older all-season tires that have already hardened somewhat.

For maintenance and repairs of your car in winter conditions, it is important to check your tires in time. Don’t wait until the first frost to think about a tire change.

A practical example: during the winter of 2021, we saw a lot of damage from drivers who continued driving with all-season tires during the snow period. Especially on hills and in curves things went wrong.

Which factors determine if all-season tires are suitable for your situation?

Your residential area, annual mileage, type of car, and driving behavior determine whether all-season tires are sufficient. Do you live in a flat area with mild winters and drive little? Then they may be suitable. Do you drive a lot or live in an area with regular winter weather? Then choose winter tires.

Factor All-season suitable Winter tires needed
Residential area Flat, urban area Rural, hills, forests
Annual mileage Less than 15,000 km More than 15,000 km
Driving behavior Careful, local Sporty, long distances
Car type Light passenger car Heavy car, SUV, van

Personal circumstances play a major role. Can you stay home in bad weather? Then all-season tires are more of an option. Do you always have to hit the road for work or family? Then winter tires are safer.

Your driving experience also counts. Experienced drivers can better handle reduced grip, but they too benefit from better tires in difficult conditions.

The age of your tires is also important. Old all-season tires (older than 6 years) perform worse in winter conditions than new ones. Making your car winter-ready also means checking whether your tires are still in good condition.
