How often should I have my car serviced?

The maintenance frequency of your car depends on multiple factors: mileage, age of the car, driving behavior, and manufacturer recommendations. As a general guideline, minor service is required annually or every 15,000 kilometers, and major service every two years or 30,000 kilometers. Modern cars with a maintenance interval indicator will indicate themselves when a service is needed. In this article, we explain how to determine when your car exactly needs maintenance.

What actually determines how often your car needs maintenance?

Your car’s maintenance schedule is determined by a combination of factors. The mileage and age of your car are the most important indicators, but your driving behavior and type of usage also play a major role. Manufacturers provide specific recommendations per model, which you can find in the maintenance booklet. Not every car has the same maintenance schedule, because different brands and models have different technical specifications.

For Renault models, we work with official flat rate codes that precisely indicate what needs to happen when. For Peugeot and Citroën, the maintenance intervals are comparable, but here too it differs per model. Modern cars often have longer intervals than older models, because engine oil and components have improved.

Your driving behavior has more influence than you think. Do you mainly drive short distances in the city? Then components wear out faster than with highway use. With city use, the engine barely reaches operating temperature, causing more condensation and contamination. This means your oil gets dirty faster and you might need a service more often than the standard interval indicates.

Highway use is generally kinder to your car. The engine runs at optimal temperature, shifts less frequently, and experiences less wear. If you drive 50 kilometers on the highway to work daily, for example, you can often go longer with the same maintenance interval than someone who only drives in the city.

Other factors that play a role are the number of cold starts, driving with a trailer, and the conditions in which you drive. Do you often drive on unpaved roads or in dusty environments? Then your car needs more intensive maintenance. Extreme temperatures, both cold and heat, can also influence the maintenance schedule.

How do you know when it’s really time for a service?

Your car gives various signals when maintenance is needed. The most obvious is the maintenance warning light on your dashboard. Modern cars have a maintenance interval indicator that calculates when you need to go to the garage based on kilometers, time, and sometimes even driving behavior. With older cars, you need to keep track yourself of when the last service was and how many kilometers you’ve driven since then.

Also pay attention to changes in your car’s driving behavior. Does the car pull to the left or right? Does the engine make strange noises? Do you smell a burning odor? These are signals that something is wrong. Some things can wait until the scheduled maintenance, others require immediate action.

Your maintenance booklet is your best friend when it comes to planning. Here it states exactly when which components should be checked or replaced. For Renault, Peugeot, and Citroën, we know these schedules by heart, but for other brands too, we can tell you what needs to happen when.

Visual checks you can do yourself also help. Regularly check your tire pressure and tread depth, see if all your lights work, and check the oil level. If your oil is dark brown or black and feels thick, it’s time for an oil change. Do you see fluids under your car? Then there’s a leak somewhere and you need to come by quickly.

When in doubt: better too early than too late. If you hear, smell, or feel something strange, schedule a check. What starts small can grow into an expensive repair if you leave it too long. A quick diagnosis can save you a lot of money and worry.

What is the difference between minor and major service?

Minor service is the standard annual or periodic service where the basics are checked and replaced. This usually happens annually or every 15,000 kilometers. During minor service, the engine oil is changed, the oil filter is replaced, and all important components are visually inspected. We look at brakes, tires, lighting, fluid levels, and the general condition of your car.

Major service is more extensive and takes place every two years or 30,000 kilometers. Here, more filters are replaced, such as the air filter and pollen filter. The spark plugs are also checked or replaced, and a more thorough inspection is carried out of components that show more wear. During major service, we also look at the timing belt, for example, if it’s near the replacement interval.

Between minor and major service, there are interim checks that are important. Think of tire changes from summer to winter tires, or an MOT test. The MOT is mandatory for gasoline and electric cars after four years, then annually. For diesel cars, the first MOT applies after three years.

What exactly happens during maintenance differs per brand and model. For Renault, we work with official flat rate codes, so you know exactly beforehand what will be done and what it costs. For other brands, we create a clear maintenance plan based on manufacturer recommendations and the condition of your car.

The price difference between minor and major service lies mainly in the amount of work and parts. Minor service costs less because less is replaced. Major service is more expensive, but you spread those costs over a longer period. By doing both types of maintenance on time, you keep your car in good condition and prevent surprises.

Is it harmful to postpone maintenance?

Postponing maintenance seems to save money in the short term, but often costs you more in the long run. Delayed maintenance leads to increased wear and can result in expensive repairs. Postponing a simple oil change, for example, can lead to engine damage that costs thousands of euros to repair. Dirty oil loses its lubricating function, causing metal components to rub against each other and wear accelerated.

For lease cars or cars with factory warranty, timely maintenance is mandatory. If you postpone maintenance, your warranty expires and you can be liable for the costs yourself in case of damage. Also when trading in or selling, a complete maintenance booklet with all stamps has great value. Cars without maintenance history are worth less and harder to sell.

Some components are more critical than others. With brakes, tires, and lighting, you really can’t wait. These are safety components that directly affect your driving safety and that of others. A timing belt must also be replaced on time. If it breaks while driving, your engine suffers serious damage.

Other things can sometimes wait a bit. A small stone in your windshield doesn’t need to be repaired immediately if it’s not in your field of vision. A broken parking sensor is annoying but not dangerous. Still, the rule applies: the longer you wait, the greater the chance that a small problem grows into a big problem.

The cost consideration is clear. Regular maintenance costs you, for example, 200 to 400 euros per year, depending on your car and the type of service. A broken engine due to delayed maintenance can cost you 3,000 to 10,000 euros. New brake discs because you waited too long to replace brake pads? That easily saves several hundred euros extra. Investing in timely maintenance is always cheaper than repairing what broke due to neglect.
