Monteur controleert bandenprofieldiepte, antivries en accu tijdens winterse auto-inspectie in professionele garage

What is all included in a winter check for my car?

A winter check for your car involves a thorough inspection of all components that are important for safe driving in cold conditions. This includes checking tires, battery, lighting, windshield wipers, fluids, the heating system and air conditioning. Most garages perform a winter check for approximately 75 to 150 euros and this usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. You can also perform some basic checks yourself before going to the garage.

Why do you actually need a winter check for your car?

A winter check helps you prevent problems caused by low temperatures, road salt and reduced visibility. Winter conditions present your car with additional challenges that can lead to breakdowns or unsafe situations.

Winter is hard on your car. Low temperatures cause your battery to have less capacity, while you actually need more power for heating and lighting. The salt on the roads attacks rubber components and can cause corrosion. Additionally, in bad weather you have an extra need for properly functioning lighting and windshield wipers.

Making your car winter-ready prevents you from being stranded on the side of the road with a breakdown. It also helps to limit fuel consumption: a poorly maintained car uses more fuel in winter. Moreover, a winter check contributes to your safety and that of other road users.

Which components are exactly checked during a winter check?

During a winter check, all components that are important for safe driving in cold and wet conditions are inspected. This includes the tires, battery, lighting, windshield wipers, fluids and the heating system.

The tires receive extra attention. The mechanic checks the tread depth (minimum 1.6 mm, but 3 mm is recommended for winter), the pressure and whether there is any damage. They also look at whether winter tires are needed for your driving behavior.

Component What is checked Why important in winter
Battery Charging capacity and connections Cold reduces capacity by 20-30%
Lighting All lights (front, rear, side) Longer, darker periods
Windshield wipers Condition of rubber and operation More rain and snow
Fluids Antifreeze and windshield washer fluid Protection against freezing
Heating system Operation of heating and defrosting Comfort and safety

The fluids receive special attention. It is checked whether there is sufficient antifreeze in the coolant and whether the windshield washer fluid is frost-resistant. The heating system is also tested to ensure that your windows defrost quickly.

How much does a winter check cost and how long does it take?

A winter check usually costs between 75 and 150 euros, depending on the type of garage and what exactly is being checked. The inspection itself takes about 30 to 60 minutes, but you should set aside a morning or afternoon for any repairs.

The price differs per garage. At an independent garage you often pay less than at a brand dealer, but the quality of the inspection can be comparable. Large dealers sometimes charge more due to their overhead, but they do have access to brand-specific knowledge.

The best time for a winter check is October or early November, before the first frost comes. Then you still have time to solve any problems without haste. Don’t wait until December, because then garages are often busier and it takes longer before you can get an appointment.

Additional costs arise if components need to be replaced. Think of new windshield wipers (20-40 euros), winter tires (400-800 euros for a set) or a new battery (80-200 euros). These costs are not included in the winter check itself.

What can you check yourself before going to the garage?

You can already check a lot yourself without technical knowledge. Look at your tires, test all lights, check fluid levels and assess your windshield wipers. This helps you go to the garage prepared and gives insight into possible costs.

Start with a visual inspection of your tires. Look at the tread depth by inserting a 1-euro coin into the grooves: if the golden rim remains visible, you still have sufficient tread. Also check whether the tires wear evenly and whether there are cracks or bulges in them.

For the lighting, it’s best to ask someone to help. Turn on all lights (high beam, low beam, turn signals, brake lights, reverse light) and walk around the car to check if everything works. Don’t forget the license plate lighting.

You check fluids by looking at the various reservoirs under the hood. Most have minimum and maximum lines. Pay special attention to:

  • Coolant (usually in a transparent reservoir)
  • Windshield washer fluid (often blue or green colored)
  • Engine oil (check with the dipstick)
  • Brake fluid (important for safety)

Test your windshield wipers by turning them on and seeing if they move evenly across the windshield without leaving streaks. Also feel the rubber: if it’s hard or cracked, they need to be replaced. With maintenance and repairs, these simple checks can save a lot of time and money.
