When should I change my oil?

You should change your engine oil according to your car manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, usually between 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers or once per year. The exact frequency depends on the type of oil, your driving habits, and the engine type. Do you often drive short distances or under heavy conditions? Then more frequent oil changes are recommended. Below you’ll find all the practical information about when and why you need to change your engine oil.

Why do you actually need to change oil?

Engine oil lubricates all moving parts in your engine, keeps them cool, and protects against wear. While driving, oil becomes contaminated with combustion residues, metal particles, and moisture. Over time, the oil loses its protective properties and becomes thicker or thinner. Without fresh oil, engine components wear out faster, which can ultimately lead to expensive damage.

Your engine runs thousands of times per minute, with metal components moving against each other. The oil film between these components prevents direct friction and keeps the temperature under control. At the same time, the oil captures small particles released during combustion. These particles remain suspended in the oil until your filter catches them.

But a filter can’t stop everything. After a while, the oil becomes saturated with dirt and loses its lubricating capacity. Acids also form from combustion that make the oil more aggressive. In Renault models like the Clio or Megane, you often notice this through an engine warning light, but by then it’s actually too late. Regular oil changes prevent internal engine damage.

For modern cars with turbo engines, like many Peugeot and Citroën models, good oil is even more important. These engines run harder and hotter, causing oil to age faster. Hybrid and electric cars with combustion engines also need regular fresh oil, even if you drive electrically most of the time.

How often should you change your oil?

Most car manufacturers recommend oil changes between 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers or once per year, whichever comes first. For Renault, we work with official flat rate codes that precisely indicate when which maintenance is needed. For Peugeot and Citroën, manufacturers often use longer intervals, but this strongly depends on the type of oil and your driving behavior.

Modern synthetic oil lasts longer than old-fashioned mineral oil. Many new cars use long-life oil that can last 30,000 kilometers or two years. But be careful: these longer intervals only apply under ideal conditions. Do you mainly drive short distances, often sit in traffic, or use a trailer? Then you need to change more frequently.

Short trips are harder on your engine than you think. The engine doesn’t reach proper operating temperature, causing moisture to remain in the oil. This moisture forms acids that corrode the engine from the inside. Do you mainly drive short distances through the city? Then change your oil every year, even if you haven’t driven 15,000 kilometers yet. The same applies to cars that sit idle frequently or are heavily loaded.

When in doubt, it’s best to follow your car’s maintenance indicator system. Many modern cars have an oil quality sensor that indicates when replacement is needed. For older cars without this system, it’s wise to stick to the mileage or time period. We always recommend changing your oil at least once per year, regardless of mileage.

What are the signs that your oil needs replacement?

The clearest signal is the oil warning light on your dashboard that starts glowing. But by then you actually already have a problem. It’s better to check regularly yourself. Pull out the dipstick and look at the color: fresh oil is light brown and transparent, old oil is dark brown to black and cloudy. Does the oil smell burnt or is there a milky substance on the dipstick? Then replacement is urgently needed.

Your ears can also warn you. Do you hear ticking or rattling sounds from the engine, especially when starting? Then the oil is probably too old and no longer protects properly. In Renault engines with timing chains, you sometimes hear this as a rattling sound during cold starts. This means the chain isn’t being properly lubricated.

Also pay attention to engine noise while driving. A well-lubricated engine runs smoothly and quietly. Does the engine sound rougher or louder than normal? Then check your oil level and quality. Modern cars warn you via the dashboard when the next service is scheduled, but it’s wise to check yourself in between.

Practical tip: check your oil level at least once per month. Park your car on level ground, wait until the engine is cold, pull out the dipstick, clean it, insert it back, and pull it out again. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Too little oil is dangerous, but too much can also cause damage. Do you notice you regularly need to add oil? Then have it checked to find out where it’s going.

What happens if you wait too long to change oil?

Delayed oil changes lead to increased engine wear because the protective oil film becomes thinner and loses its lubricating properties. The engine has to work harder, resulting in higher fuel consumption and less power. In the long term, scratches can develop on cylinder walls and bearing damage can occur, meaning thousands of euros in repair costs.

Initially, you might not even notice it. The engine still starts normally and you keep driving. But meanwhile, all sorts of things are happening. Old oil becomes thicker and more viscous, making it harder to flow through narrow channels. Some engine components then receive insufficient lubrication. Or the oil becomes thinner due to contamination, making the protective layer between metal parts too thin.

In Renault turbo engines, you often see turbo problems when the oil is too old. The turbo spins at high speed and constantly needs fresh, clean oil. Without it, the turbo will wear out or even seize up. That’s a repair costing thousands of euros that you can easily prevent by changing your oil on time. The same applies to Peugeot and Citroën models with turbos.

Your catalytic converter and particulate filter can also suffer damage from old oil. If the engine burns oil because the pistons no longer seal properly, oil residues end up in the exhaust system that can clog these expensive components. Replacing a particulate filter quickly costs 1000 euros or more. Much cheaper is simply following your maintenance schedule and changing your engine oil on time.

The good news: most modern engines are reasonably tolerant. If you drive a few hundred kilometers past your replacement interval, there’s usually nothing wrong. But don’t let it go on for months or thousands of kilometers. The risk then becomes really too great. When in doubt, you can always stop by for a quick oil check.
